This unit is about the parts of speech. They were clasified in 8:
1. Nouns: they name things, places, animals, etc. There are countable (table, pencil) and uncountable nouns (music, information). The first ones can be counted, the second ones can't.
2. Prounouns: they replace nouns or noun phrases. There are four types on pronouns:
- Personal (suject/object) I, you, them, etc.
- Reflexive (myself, themselves, etc.)
- Relative (that, which, etc.)
- Possessive (mine, yours, etc.) DO NOT confuse them with possessive adjectives that go next to nouns.
3. Adjectives: they modify nouns. Usually the order to place them in a sentence is size, age, colour, material.
4. Adverbs: they modify adjectives, verbs or another advebs. We have adverbs of frequency (usually, sometimes), degree (very, quite), place (up, down), etc.
5. Conjuctions and prepositions: conjuctions join words or groups of words. Some of them are for, and, nor, but, or, yet. In respect of prepositions, there are three types: time, place, movement.
6. Articles: they make the nouns specific (definite article the) or unspecific (indefinite articles a and an).
7. Verbs: they are "action words". They can be transitive (they need and object) or intransitive (they don't).
8. Gerunds: they are -ing forms of the verbs. They can be subject or object. E.g.: Flying is cool. I like running in the mornings.
