Unit 6 covers the differences between the past tenses: past simple, past perfect, past continuous, and past perfect continuous. Past simple is used for past actions completed at a definite time. The past continuous is used for actions in progress at a particular time in the past. The past perfect is used for a past action and a related past action prior to that. Past perfect continuous is used to talk about two actions, one of which had been continuing at another point in the past. I learned that a tense can only be a perfect tense if it uses the auxiliary verb "have." If there is a present participle, it is a continuous tense. The irregular past simple forms have no rules and must be memorized.
