This unit covered how to teach new language to students with ideas about activities for each stage of the ESA method. The teacher needs to be able to teach vocabulary, grammar structures and functions (i.e. what the person is communicating for) so that students can feel confident and comfortable using what they had learned.
The factors for successful teaching for each are explained. For example in bringing in new vocabulary to students the teacher needs to remember the language level of students, so I would be patronising to intermediate level students if I'm teaching about movie genres if I introduced 'action movies' when they knew about basic movie genres already. This I had encountered in teaching presentation techniques last semester. Other factors to take into account for teaching new vocabulary are similarity to English words that the students know already, appropriacy and spelling and pronunciation. Yet again I found the techniques/ideas of activities useful for what more I could do to make lessons interesting and extending learning. I valued in particular the tasks of creating lesson plans on the task sheet for improving my practice as a teacher rather than answering questions to pass a test.
