Delmont, Pennsylvania TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
Teachers should be entertaining, knowledgeable, and love to teach. It is not surprising that an unmotivated, uninterested teacher is not going to facilitate a good learning environment or help a student's progress. The teacher has many roles to play during lessons, including: controller, organizer, assessor, observer, and as a model for how to speak English in order to develop the learner's conversational skills, knowledge, vocabulary, and general comfort with speaking, asking questions, or being corrected. Each student will have varying levels of experience with English and the teacher needs to assume different roles to tailor their teaching to individual students, but also to the entire class.
Adults and younger classes of children face different challenges and advantages while learning English. Adults may have more rapport with teachers, but they may feel more inhibited speaking the language or fear correction. They also tend to be more focused and motivated. Younger learners have shorter attention spans, but generally find learning more fun if their activities are varied and the teacher doesn't lecture during the majority of the lesson. They have fewer ingrained expectations on how lessons should be taught than adult learners. Younger students generally aren't as afraid to experiment with language as some of the adult students. With these examples in mind, I have a much better understanding now of how to tailor a class to meet the needs of older and younger students.
