Unit 9 addresses lesson planning and why it's important, as well as a format to follow to plan a lesson. Planning lessons is important to create a general structure and logical sequence for a lesson. It is a working document, which can be referred to and changed as needed during a lesson. It also acts as a record of what has been taught. A lesson plan should include general information about the lesson as well as what should happen during it. Lesson plans should be kept flexible and simple, not be scripted, and have a good balance of skills (speaking, reading, writing, and listening) and activities. A lesson plan should include the following: learner objectives, or what you want students to be able to do by the end of the lesson; personal aims/what you as the teacher would like to improve; the language point/theme of the lesson; teaching aids you may need; anticipated problems for both students and teacher; procedure/activities used to achieve the objective; phase (Engage/Study/Activate); how long each activity is expected to take; who will be interacting at each phase (student-teacher, student-student etc); class level; number of students; date and time of the class.
