Unit 19 covers teaching more specialized groups, such as beginners, individuals, young learners, and business people. When teaching beginners, some things to keep in mind include that you need to be clear with your language and instructions, be realistic about your aims and not try to do too much too soon, adapt to the needs of students, be visual, encourage speaking in English, ask lots of questions, and not use the students' native language. When teaching individual students, they may be more motivated and their needs more clearly defined, but you cannot do some activities you may do in a larger class, as some of the classroom dynamic is lost. Lessons will tend to be less formal. Teaching children can be very rewarding, as they tend to be curious, which can be motivating. They're also used to people repeating and explaining words to them while they focus on objects or activities taking place. They tend to get bored, however, and have shorter attention spans and may cause more behavioral problems. Teaching business English may occur 1 to 1, at a company, or when a company comes to a language school. There may be a variety of clients with different backgrounds and ages, and they may study over a longer period of time in order to learn language for specific purposes. They may often be tired due to attending classes after work and may not pick up the language as easily as younger learners, especially if they have less previous formal English study. Finally, a class may either be monolingual or multilingual. A monolingual class will have students whose native language is the same, so they'll have common difficulties and culture and may be able to help each other. They may have less exposure to English and may try to use their native language often. Multilingual classes will have students from various backgrounds and languages and may have more exposure to the language they're learning, but they may not have common difficulties when learning.
