Teaching English as a second language is already a difficult task but there are plenty of ways to avoid having confusing and potentially problematic classes. Creating a good rapport with the students from the beginning is the first, and most important, hurtle. Whether students already know each other or they are meeting each other for the first time, it's important to know and learn about your class so you can understand and help them learn better. Being prepared for mixed levels would be the next important hurtle since mixed levels have the potential for getting bored or not participating in lessons. Coming prepared with activities that challenge respective levels and keep students engaged, as well as activities that help shier, lower level students keep up, will keep classes on track and keep that good rapport intact.
