I was glad to read about the struggles teachers often go through to teach writing skills to their ESL students. I imagine it would take longer for students to learn how to write than it would for them to learn how to speak because they would be more interested in speaking, as the lesson suggests. Still, the tips provided in the lesson for how to actively encourage writing from students are helpful, notably to not make the task too difficult, to always be encouraging, not to focus on mistakes, and to promote group work at times, even if writing is often a solo activity.
The number of games mentioned in this lesson was beneficial too. I imagine I would use crosswords to help students practice elicited vocabulary, and hang man to help them learn new words.
I'm looking forward to employing some of the strategies suggested to help students learn to develop confidence in speaking as well. Keep the accuracy lessons (which are more concerned with reproducing target vocabularies) to the study phase, and the fluency lessons (which are more concerned with allowing students to develop confidence by using the language in less structured activities) to the activate phase of the lesson.
