There are a number of tests that can be given to English-learners to gauge their knowledge of the language. A placement test is typically the first test a learner will take, and measures his or her English proficiency level in order to match the learner to a suitable class level. A progress test measures the learner's general progress within the course. A diagnostic test may be given right after a placement test in order to give the teacher a better idea of the students' specific strengths and weaknesses so that the course may be effective for them. A practice test is a test modeled after an external test in order to give the students an idea of what will be on the external test. An external test is a test such as the TOEFL or the TOEIC which gives a score or a certificate for completion that can indicate a learner's language level to employers and educational institutions.
