In this unit, there are two videos showing us what an effective ELL class and an ineffective ELL class look like. From the second video, I learned that, a teacher's attitude towards the class has an effect to the success of the class. A teacher must learn the student name to be able to build the rapport in the class and try to involved every student to his/ her teaching.
When giving instruction, a teacher should use the appropriate language which fits students language level. When students are confused, we can slow down and try to modify our language into student friendly language for them to understand the purpose/question.
When correcting students, we should be careful not to defend our students since it would upset their enthusiasm to learn. We should consider the stage of our teaching : engage, study, activate for error correction. We should not correct students in engage stage. We should also be careful when we correct students in study stage.
There should be interaction in class between teacher-student and student-student. This would make class climate more engaging and make learning fun.
Using ESA for teaching is meaningful. We can be creative in using 'Boomerang ESA' lesson, 'Patchwork ESA' lesson and 'Straight Arrow' ESA lesson to carry out teaching.
Encouragement is very important. It protects student initiative and willingness to participate in our lesson.
