I actually was allowed to choose the course material for my English expressions elective class at my Japanese school this year and it was quite difficult. They just gave me a few sample books and told me to choose one and tell them why, I ended up choosing one that was both challenging with grammar and exercises but also had attractive pictures to keep the students attention. Why I chose a difficult one? Because these students are smarter than other teachers give them credit for.
