This unit covers planning lessons. At the start, the important functions of writing out lesson plans, which are:
• An aid to planning – which helps you think logically through the stages in relation to available time.
• A working document – helps you to keep on target and gives you something to refer to during the lesson.
• A record – of what a class has done and which materials have been used.
Other principles of lesson planning such as “keeping it simple,” “not scripting,” “maintaining structure,” “timing,” “balancing skills,” “flexibility and adaptation,” and the importance of being organized are also given.
There is a recommended list of defined things to include in a lesson plan, including:
• Learner objectives
• Personal aims
• Language point
• Teaching aids
• Anticipated problems
• Procedure
• Phase
• Timing
• Interaction
• Class level
• Number of students
• Date/time
• Teacher’s and observer’s names
To pull all of this together, a handy sample lesson plan is included, and a blank form for the prospective teacher to use, if he or she chooses. The importance of a teacher monitoring the quality of lessons, and self evaluation, are stressed toward the end.
