Unit 14 addresses coursebooks and lesson materials. Some teachers love to use coursebooks, some don't, as they can be both a good syllabus and outline for a course and are graded to the level of students, but may also be out of date and less interesting to students. They may find its use predictable and boring. The two main types of lesson materials are authentic and created. Authentic materials include most things a native speaker would hear or read: interviews, newspapers, magazines, songs, menus, etc. They are not created for EFL students, and therefore need to be chosen carefully. The benefits are that they are real and therefore more interesting and engaging, they can build confidence when students understand them, and they can be tailored to the interests of students. Created materials are designed by the teacher to replace or supplement materials from a course book. Unlike authentic materials, they can be graded to the level of the students. They include such things as crosswords, word searches, flashcards, etc. A good compromise is to use a coursebook for a defined syllabus and portions of a lesson, but supplement with other more interesting and relevant materials and activities, in order to keep students motivated and engaged.
