Unit six gives an overview of the system and and structure of past tenses. There are certain similarities to present (and future) tenses in usage and emerging. E.g. all continuous forms use some form of the verb " to be" plus "ing" form of the verb. Perfect forms have some form of the verb "to be" and the past participle of the verb (for regular verbs we just add -ed at the end, while irregular verbs change their whole form and students have to memorize them). Perfect continuous forms feature some form of the verb "to have" plus"been" plus the "ing" form of the verb. All forms are used as either affirmative, negative or a question. Past simple is used for actions completed at a definite time in the past, past continuous for interrupted actions, past perfect indicates an action completed before another past action, while past perfect continuous is not so often used, only when we talk about longer actions or situations in the past that had been going on continuously up to the past moment that we are thinking about. Unit also gives an overview of the most common students' mistakes: making questions and negatives, irregular verbs' forms, omission of auxiliaries or "ing" ending, as well as confusing past and present forms. Moreover, unit offers some activate phase teaching ideas, so as to make learning tenses as easy as possible (e.g. word games, story telling, interview role-play, detective game, diaries, journals etc.)
