Unit 7 focuses on teaching receptive skills. Receptive skills are the ability to read and listen, and the two general reasons why we perform these tasks are to fulfill a specific purpose or for entertainment. We read and listen in many ways, such as skimming, scanning, predicting information, and reading for details. It is important that each lesson highlights all of the basic skills, and uses a number of different learning techniques to do this. To ensure that the lesson runs smoothly, the teacher should pre-teach any vocabulary that the students may not know, but may be useful for the lesson. The teacher also should also try to choose topics that are appropriate for the students' age and are of interest to the student to help them become interested in the topic.
