This unit addressed ways to help learners develop the receptive skills -- reading and listening.
I found the How We Read and Listen section very helpful because it outlined the skills learners should develop so that they can have more confidence in reading and listening in English. These are skills like predicting, scanning, skimming and deducing.
From the teacher's perspective, having this list of skills front-of-mind would be very helpful in developing effective lesson plans. Lessons should not only be fun and engaging, but should also have clear objectives of course. Reading and listening lessons can be easily simply that: reading and listening practice. But the lessons could also be used to help the learners develop other skills for comprehension that they can take forward.
That is what I have learned from this lesson: there is ANOTHER layer of objective that should be placed in a lesson plan, to sit with with 'reading and listening practice', and 'vocabulary expansion'. The third aim is: tools/skills development to help students' comprehension in future.
