As a native English American speaker, I had no problem with deciphering pronunciation; however, the rules and reasons for trying to explain pronunciation to foreigners are even too complex for me to understand, much less try to teach them to others!! I don't feel this lesson is an essential part of teaching English because it is very confusing, and can discourage students who are weak in the language to continue if they are already struggling with vocabulary, etc. I would rather incorporate the pronunciation part as part of each lesson, and review the old materials already learned before beginning a new lesson with each class, including pronunciation. This way, I reinforce old patterns while instilling new ones. A separate lesson on pronunciation is absurd at any level!!
