There are different ways of evaluating students' levels and progress as well as some of the external exams. There are number of ways to assess a student's language level. It can very useful to ask the students to evaluate the course by means of questionnaire or guided discussion. It is often appropriate to give tests at different stages in a course. Placement tests are designed to enable teachers to place new students into the correct class according to their language ability. Progress test should be used regularly to gauge what language has been remembered and what language has been forgotten. Diagnostic tests are basically similar in content to placement tests. Practice tests should follow the format and the structure of the external examination that they are being given in preparation for. External exam are not usually conducted in language school. There are lot of types of external examination. In my opinion, evaluating students' knowledge and ability is very important to help the teacher in determining their learning level.
