Unit 3 provides a very in-depth analysis of student psychology and how to properly influence and manage it. The learning environment needs to be supportive and nurturing as opposed to overbearing. I appreciated the denouncement of the teacher's "dominating" presence. I truly feel that the student-teacher rapport must be respectful but needs to be friendly and comfortable. This unit also addresses very specific techniques, like using student's names at the end of a question, that could be easily overlooked by an instructor. One question that threw me off was question 18 about seating arrangements. Given the state of "political correctness" in Canada, it was very counter-intuitive to me that nationalities would be considered. In Canada, it could be considered offensive to arrange students based on their ethnicity. However, when teaching ESL to a group of mixed nationalities it can be assumed that students will gravitate towards their peers of the same nationality out of an innate desire for camaraderie, comfort and confidence.
