This chapter teach us that if we understand the different parts of speech, it extends the range of your vocabulary, because we can choose other words from the same set of elements. Knowing what an adverb is and what adverbs look like (for example, in English, most end in ‘-ly’) allows us to select from a vast range of adverbs in speech and in writing. Not knowing what an adverb is tends to restrict the speaker or writer to ‘soundbites’ - learned phrases instead of imaginative use of language with well-chosen words.
If we don’t know what a preposition is, we will probably write ‘who’ instead of ‘whom’, but if a preposition precedes ‘who’ it becomes whom. we should recognise a preposition in order to get it right.
