Salt Creek, Oregon TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
A short but to the point unit that discusses lesson plans.
The lesson plan has several important functions:
1. An aid to planning
2. A working document
3. A record of what has been done (which also means it can be used by another teacher that needs to cover)
Some basic but important principles we should keep in mind when drawing up a lesson plan:
- Keep it simple
- Do not use it to script the lesson
- Keep it flexible and open to adaption
- Structure and maintain that structure
- Add the anticipated time for each activity
- Check for a balance of skills.
It is recommended to include the following when drawing up a lesson plan:
- Learner objectives
- Personal aims
- Language points
- Teaching aids
- Anticipated problems and solutions
- Procedure
- Phase
- Timing
- Interaction
- Class level
- Number of students
- Date/time
- Teacher’s name (and if there is one the observer’s name)
When we plan a sequence of lesson plans we must consider flexibility, goals, revision and variety and balance:
Another document we might draw up, but only after the lesson, is a self-evaluation form to improve our own teaching.
There are some other things teachers can do to make sure the lesson goes more smoothly. These are making sure we have the lesson plan we drew up and all the materials needed, check the equipment, lay out materials, arrange seating, have a clean board and be ready to welcome the students as they come in.
As I have been teaching for quite some time I usually jot down a list with points/activities in a notebook that I plan to do during class and prep materials based on this. This way I also keep a lot of flexibility but still haves something to fall back on. However, I do really like some parts of the example lesson plan given. Especially the expected difficulties of both the student as well as the teacher. Another part is the record you are keeping this way. I do plan to use the lesson plan outline provided when planning my future classes.
