This Unit covers the selection criteria for new vocabulary. It largely refers back to Unit 2 with examples of teaching methodologies and their application in teaching new vocabulary and new language structures. The unit provided a clear rationality for what is important when selecting new words. I am guilty of teaching my students the origin of words because I find it interesting and, just like the radicals in Chinese characters, there are patterns in the English language that are derived from the Latin root words. However, this Unit has shown me that this is potentially an over-complication that creates unnecessary TTT. The words should be selected based on their relevance to the lesson and the explanation should be restricted to the understanding and application of the word rather than the back-story.
