Unit 14 gave a quick overview of the pros and cons of using course books. It also touched on how supplementary materials can be used to support lessons and courses that basically follow a course book or a set of course books.
The unit stressed the importance of getting 'off book' in lessons and some supplementary materials and ideas were provided.
Getting 'off book', I feel, is where the fun part of teaching can come into play in the classroom. Materials can be easily tailored to culture, age, interests and grammar or vocabulary points. In my experience students care very little if the illustrations are crude stick men and the handout is hand-written... if the lesson is effective in its overall design.
Despite the cons of using a course book, I would prefer using a book to not using one. If you have a group of students for many weeks or a few months, even with quite a bit of making supplementary materials, a book can save a teacher a lot of planning time and can provide the group progression.
