Unit 8 was another great future verb tenses review, and of course it did help me to remember what I’d once learned in grammar classes. It also reminded me that as far as usage goes, what is taught in this unit won’t always match how people talk in real life. I’ll need to remember to teach the students the different possibilities they’ll hear and choose to say for themselves. For example, plenty of English speakers don’t think about “predictions based on evidence” when deciding to use going to plus the infinitive instead of using will plus the base verb. Or they may not think about whether their intentions are stronger, so they should choose will. Part of this is because it’s instinctive—something gained from growing up as a native speaker—and part of it is the laziness of speakers. How many people still use was when they should use were? How many people use good when they should use well? I know this unit has helped me to think about this important conversation I’ll have with students someday about why we say what we say!
