Function-based lessons that teach the student how to situationally apply newly acquired language is with boomerang or patchwork esa structures. Students can usually understand more language than they can actively use. Students need to know what the language means, how it is used, what the grammatical form is and how it is said/ written. Finally, an understanding of how the language is spoken and any differences in how it looks in written form.
