This unit goes over the basic definitions of teachers and learners. I learned what makes a good teacher, i.e. being good at error correction and establishing rapport. There are many different roles that teachers will take on in the classroom, all of which are important for teaching effectively. It is important to know when to model, when to facilitate, and so on. There are also characteristics of good learners, such as willingness to listen to the language and experiment with it. I also learned about the differences between adult and young learners, the levels of learning, and how important it is to be aware of cultural difference, as this can affect the success of a classroom. Adult learners are often more motivated than young learners, which is positive, but they also come with their own challenges, such as being less able to absorb a language through context in the way that young learners can. Finally, one of the most important things I learned about was motivation. There are many different motivating factors that students will bring to the classroom, such as future career prospects, pure interest in the language, and desire to communicate with colleagues, friends, and partners. It is imperative that teachers create lessons that are interesting, varied, and enjoyable in order to maintain the motivations of the students.
