This Unit refers to the selection of material for a classroom. I strongly agree with the philosophy that authentic material can be more interesting to the students. However, naturalized language can prove to be an obstacle in my experience. Using a course book or ESL materials is more effective for students with a lower English ability. Graded material ensures that you can focus on the core concepts and not waste time explaining too many new vocabulary words, colloquialisms and irregular sentence structures. In my experience, more advanced students enjoy discussing current events and more relevant documents so authentic material can be used at these levels. This unit also provides an excellent structure for generating "role-play" dialogues through the boomerang ESA lesson plan.
