Unit 2 focuses on effective teaching methods, feedback, and corrections. There are many different ways that a teacher can conduct a lesson and still see the learners achieve success. While not all teaching methods may prove to be affective for all ages and all levels of learning, it is important to use a variety of methods when teaching in order to keep the learners interested and to be able to reach every learner in his or her unique style of learning. Methods such as grammar translation and audio-lingualism have learners focus on the grammar and structure of the language itself, while methods such as the Lexical approach, community language learning, and communicative language teaching encourage learners to interact with one another and develop their skills during real conversation situations. One very affective method, which allows the teacher to combine many of the previously mentioned methods, is ESA; engage, study, and activate. During the engage stage, the teacher tries to get the learners interested in the lesson by using games, music, pictures, or anything that the learners can interact with. This stage is considered to be a warm up, and should allow the learners to use some of the skills that they have learned in past lessons, and may include some language from the lesson to come. During the study stage, learners focus on the structure of the language itself. Here we might see teachers use activities such as elicitation, repetition and drilling, and worksheets to help deliver new vocabulary or concepts to the learners. The final stage of ESA is activate. During this stage, the learners are encouraged to use all of the language skills that they have. Activities in this stage encourage students to speak freely in conversation situations. Role-playing, debates, story-telling, and dialogues can all be used in order to help get the students speaking to one another about real situations. Through out each lesson, it is important to be aware of errors, mistakes, and the timely and affective correction of both. It is important to try to allow the learner to realize the mistake on his or her own, and provide support and encouragement so that the learner still feels successful while studying the new language.
