Appreciate the outlined pros and cons of using course books and workbooks, which often become stale and uninspiring for both teach and students alike! I feel that they should be used in tandem with a teacher's creativity to suppliment the information given for a particular lesson. I.e., discussing the grammatical tenses, state the objective of the lesson, then be creative with ways to demonstrate the point, through realia, games, etc., rather than rote exercises, word gaps only, true false questions, etc. I would be a teacher who keeps things fun and spontaneous, without worrying too much over the nuts and botls of the lesson, as long as the outcome is the same, and they can walk away learning a new way to speak English!
