Unit 8 focuses on how to teach productive skills. The productive skills are speaking and writing, both of which are key when learning a new language. It is important that the teacher uses lessons that test for both accuracy and fluency to ensure that the students can not only use the language correctly, but that they can also think on their own and start trying to use the language in a more creative way. Different activities used to encourage speaking can be grouped into 3 categories, controlled activities, guided activities, and creative communication activities. Controlled and guided activities focus more on accuracy, while creative communication activities give students more freedom to experiment and use their own ideas. Activities such as pair work and group work allow the teacher to test for both accuracy and fluency while the students interact with one another. There are many important things to focus on while teaching a lesson centered around writing. Handwriting, spelling, and layout/punctuation are equally important because all play an important role in mastering a new language. Using games while teaching can add an element of fun to your classroom and can help to make learning easier and more enjoyable for the students.
