This unit taught some interesting techniques and strategies for teaching phonetics, something that is often taken for granted, but vitally important for learners of English. English is not phonetic, so it is quite difficult to learn all the rules. I was frustrated but, in the end, really enjoyed translating the phonetic alphabet. I’ve taught pronunciation before, and I found that the easiest way for students to see it would be to write it using easier letters so they would understand. So for example, “Example” would be written “x-am-pull”. I was kind of surprised not to see that included in a technique. The notes on Intonation and the types of sounds was helpful even just so teachers are more aware of the way that the mouth moves.
