Unit 9 focuses on the types of materials that can be used during class. Teachers tend to use three types of materials when teaching class; authentic materials, created materials, and a course book. Authentic materials are anything that a native speaker could read or hear and uses the language in a real life situation, such as a newspaper article, a clip from a movie, a lunch menu, or a brochure. This type of classroom material should be carefully selected to make sure that it is appropriate for the language level of the students. Another type of classroom material is created material, or things that the teacher makes him or herself for a specific lesson or class. This can include role play cards, crossword puzzles, word searches, and gap fill activities. The last type of classroom material is a course book. There are many benefits to using a course book, such as the fact that that it may be expected by the students and that it provides a syllabus and a structured progression for learning. The downsides to using a course book are that books are created for general audiences, not specific learners, and that all of the material and exercises may not be appropriate for the class or the learner. No matter what types of materials the teacher chooses, he or she must make sure that it is appropriate for the language level of the students and that the activities are enhanced by the learning materials to encourage the best possible lesson for the students.
