Unit 2 provides a comprehensive overview of lesson structures and suggestions for activities. I strongly believe, from experience teaching and as a student, that a stimulating learning environment is necessary to the learning process. I took two years of Spanish as a teenager and, although I retained much of what I learned, I found that the instructor was unmotivated and monotonous. As a result, my enthusiasm dwindled and my performance suffered. On the other hand, the instructors that stand out as inspiring influences are those that have provided a dynamic learning environment with lots of opportunity to participate in discussions and activities. The highlight of this unit, in my opinion, is the patchwork lesson plan. The patchwork lesson plan provides a simple formula to ensure that the technical elements of a lesson do not eclipse the mandate to design a stimulating lesson. In separating the "study" components and interspersing them with activities, an instructor can ensure that the content remains engaging to the students while still delivering the core knowledge in incremental steps.
