This unit is about coursebooks and lesson materials, these materials can be divided into two groups: Authentic (newspapers, magazines, songs, poems, brochures, menus, etc., they are real and therefore more interesting and motivating) and created material (crosswords, role-play cards, gap fill activities, etc., they are usually designed by the teacher, they can be graded to the level of the students).
Course books, consist of a set of materials: Student's book, workbook and teacher's book, they have some advantages like: offering continuity and progression, normally providing a balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary and skill work, it is usually attractive and appealing to the eye, etc.
and they also have some disadvantages like: they don't always fit the specific needs and interests of all the class members, exclusive use of a course book can become very predictable and boring for the students, etc.
There are different options for course book use: Omit, replace supplement and adapt.
As teachers we need to have a balance in the use between authentic and created materials, the use of the course books and the different activities planned for each phase ESA.
