Something I learned in this lesson was the fact that students will be reading and listening through a filter of whatever prior background knowledge they have. This is why it would be important to build background knowledge for the content. It should not be too much, but just enough to gain understanding. I also learned about using authentic texts vs non authentic texts for students depending on their needs. With my students, unless I am a hundred percent sure they can use authentic texts, I should probably use non authentic at the beginning.
Receptive skills are ones that aren't always the easiest to monitor because they take place internally. However, if I choose topics that interest my students, it will increase the chances of student engagement.
