A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE "UNIT 7' CONTENT AND LESSON LEARNT BY ME. This unit content titled “TEACHING RECEPTIVE SKILLS” and it covers the two skills among the four basic skills in Language, The four basic skills in languages are as follows: • Reading • Listening • Writing • Speaking Meanwhile, the receptive skills include the first two skills: [READING/ LISTENING]. The importance of all these skills cannot be overemphasized in an effective and well balanced lessons. In addition, we involve in the skill of reading and listening either for a PURPOSE, e.g. reading a particular textbook for the purpose of passing school ‘examination’ or watching my favorite program at my leisure time for PLEASURE \ ENTERTAINMENT motives and in some occasion, we engage in both at same time, e.g. learning a kind of exercise for both pleasure and purpose of physical fitness, We can easily achieve all the above skills not only by the use of the eyes and ears but also our mind for total acquisition of knowledge?, Furthermore, it is very important to note that both the reader and listener involves in the following areas depending on an individual expectation and understanding: such as; • To gain GENERAL IDEAS through quick skimming. • To get a SPECIFIC INFORMATION through scanning, • To know more or understand every details in an information\ instruction etc. through DETAILED INFORMATION. Among others areas. More so, in teaching receptive skills [Reading and Listening] we practically involve the ESA lesson approaches to make the language students achieving the lesson target \ objectives and this can be achieved smoothly by considering the following facts: • Carefully selection of text, topic, task and exposing varieties of text that will suit the student understanding and make lesson interesting and motivating. • Don’t forget the aspect of ore teaching to solve the language problematic. Finally, we can either the Straight arrow approach [E----S----A], the Patchwork etc.
