This unit on classroom management was rich in experiential insight. I appreciated the list of how gestures could reduce the need of verbal expression: using visuals, increasing the pace of the lesson, signalling to listen, get into pairs, repeat as a chorus, stopping verbal conversations for example. found the insight on how to use the students' names at the end of a question, shows respect rather than a command. Also, the use of overhead projector, for reducing of teacher with back to students in writing on the board, was strengthened to prevent discipline problems.
The variety of groupings and their pros and cons were enlightening. The frequency of whole class instruction in a language learning class was greatly reduced in my thoughts. Grouping and pairing of students greatly increases the student participation, for active practice of the language.
The insight of problem cases was most practical advice. In today's classrooms one needs to address these behavioral problems: family problems, self esteem, anxiety, peer pressure, and lack of respect for teachers are crucial to address. If a student is failing, falling behind, one must seek the advice of other teachers, counselors, parents or host families for the deeper understanding of these problems.
