Unit 3 showed many different ways in which to control and focus a class. Moreover, it stressed to me how important it is to strike a balance between the student's free reign and experimentation with the language and the teacher's explanation. Although the latter of these elements is supposed to be shorter than the former, it interested me how this time can be made as effective as possible. The use of gestures, for example, was an element that I thought particularly important as it not only can be used to control the class and induce responses from pupils; but also can be used to teach language in its own context, rather than as direct verbal or written translations. The importance of choosing the arrangement of the pupils carefully showed to be important as it can affect the class dynamic and atmosphere greatly. This must be changed for certain activities.
