This unit on teaching receptive skills brought me an understanding of instruction methods to teach reading and writing. Firstly, the reading skills, of scanning, skimming, and reading for detailed information were identified. Then, the deductive understanding to see beyond the literal, is the deeper skills that might be brought into the lesson through teacher's questioning and eliciting answers after thorough reading. Its important to teach essentials of vocabulary, and make students comfortable with reading, and speaking them using board, fill in sentences to give more confidence in students' reading of the authentic texts. I learned that authentic texts have advantages over the non-authentic text books ( in leveled language textbooks), specifically to build confidence in the students pre-knowledge in reading unknown language texts.
I learned that predicting skills are important in the engage stage, and jigsaw reading is useful in pairs of students in the study stage. I remember that jigsaw reading of sentences or paragraphs are helpful receptive tasks in reading texts. I learned that re-reading the same text assists in discovery of unknown vocabulary by the student and points to re-teaching words. In conclusion, I was strengthened to avoid whole class reading, which puts students into anxiety. In pair work, on the contrary, the students can speak to read their summary easier.
