This unit focuses on teaching Productive Skills to non-native English learners. Productive skills include speaking and writing; these are the collective counterpart to Receptive Skills (unit 11), listening and reading. The material covers the main reasons why students will want to practice their productive skills: to communicate ideas, to demonstrate interest in a topic, etc. The material also describes examples of ESA lesson planning for teaching Productive Skills. The Engage process may executed similarly to other lesson plans, but the Study Phase should focus on guided activities to practice speaking and writing (so that the teacher can make corrections and ensure ACCURACY). Then, the Activate phase should be focused more on student-initiated production of speech. This will promote FLUENCY and more natural communication of ideas and concepts.
