This unit gives an overview of the two main Receptive Skills in language comprehension: reading and listening. The material gives ideas for how to introduce language to new learners (using techniques of pre-teaching difficult concepts) and explains different ways in which we, as readers, process written information: by skimming, scanning, predicting (using contextual clues like a headline), reading for detail, etc.
When it came to the listening aspect of learning language, this unit made sure to mention that comprehending written language is often easier because the reader can review the text as many times as needed. But spoken language does not offer that same luxury. The listener must understand context, not just words and phrases, because spoken words are transient and cannot be reviewed with leisure. That was one of the most difficult aspects of learning Spanish for me. I could read and speak and write Spanish with some competence, but I struggled with listening comprehension when trying to converse with a native Spanish speaker.
