This brief unit provides benefits and drawbacks of utilizing textbooks, authentic materials, and teacher-created materials for the lessons. The benefits of authentic materials include relevant, interesting topics and natural language patterns that can develop confidence in students that are understanding the material. The problem with authentic materials is that they may be too challenging for younger students who may not be able to grasp idioms, euphemisms, or colloquial speech. Teacher-created materials, on the other hand, are able to be adapted to the needs and abilities of the students in the class. This means the teacher has the challenge of creating his/her own structure in a method that is not trialed (like a textbook), but it is certainly student-centered. Textbooks are useful in that they provide structure for the lessons in a standardized (and often previously tested) manner for the students. This also helps give the teacher guidance for how to lead the lessons. That being said, textbooks are usually generalized in their content and may require supplemental material (or omission of some content) to meet the particular educational needs of the students.
