As mentioned here the two receptive skills reading and listening are (besides speaking and wirting) important for understanding the meaning of the Text and New vocabulary but also for getting the content from the context. It helps to develop self learning and gives options and ways to make the lesson more exciting for the students and giving them Motivation because they deal with topics they are actually interested in. Again we can see that balance is really important and every skill should be taught equally to provide as much language as possible to male the students learn as much as possible without getting bored with only reading or only listening. Music is a good way to cover the listening part and lyrics for the reading part. That's more likely to arouse the interest than newspaper articles.
