This unit gives a very basic 2-point framework for how ESL teachers should organize their approaches to teaching a new language to students. These points are 1) vocabulary and 2) grammatical structure. This unit also gives an introduction for language functions that apply to both grammar and vocabulary in how both are used in everyday communication. But beyond that, this section provided specific examples and ideas for how to organize a lesson plan for both grammar and vocab (within the ESA model). For example, if the lesson is about modes of transportation, the teacher may first have an activity in which the students describe HOW they get to school each day. Then the teacher may provide materials for studying specific vocabulary words applying to modes of transportation (e.g. gap-fill or crossword worksheets). Then the class may conclude with a role-playing exercise in which the students have to find their way to different places throughout the city using different modes.
Above all, I really liked the analogy that was provided at the outset of the unit to describe the relationship between vocabulary and grammar: like a tree. Grammar is the trunk and vocabulary is the collective of leaves and branches.
