Because Unit 1 is a basic overview of the roles of teachers and students in a classroom setting, much of the information is somewhat self-explanatory. That being said, as a person with little formal training as an educator, it was helpful to read about the basic characteristics that make a good teacher (e.g. patience, thorough knowledge of subject matter, motivation for student development, etc.) because it challenged my own perceptions of myself and made me assess myself as a prospective ESL teacher. This unit was also helpful in that it provided some of the more common reasons that non-English speaking students would take an English course (e.g. professional/career development, global travel, desire to learn other languages, etc.). If I am successful in the process of teaching students of other languages, then I will have a basic understanding of some possible motivating factors for their initiative for English studies.
