This unit examines modal auxilary verbs and the passive voice in detail and gives a brief overview of phrasal verbs and relative clauses. Modal auxilary verbs are used before other verbs to add more meaning to the main verb. They include: can, could, would, will, shall, should, might, may, etc. They can be used to express obligation, possibility, ability, permission, advice and differing degrees of formality. This unit examines the usages of each of these modals and shows their structures in past, present and future situations.
There are two voices in English: the active and the passive voice. To form the passive voice, the object of an active verb becomes the subject of a passive verb. Though the meaning of the sentence remains the same, the focus is different. Only transitive verbs, followed by an object, can be used in the passive. For both the active and the passive voice, the tense of the sentence always remains the same. The tense is shown by the main verb in the active voice and the auxiliary verb 'be' in the passive voice. The passive voice is usually used when it is not important to know or we don't want to say exactly who performs the action.
A clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb. It can be independent, dependent, or relative. An independent clause is a complete sentence which contains the main subject and the verb of the sentence. A dependent clause is not a complete sentense and must be connected to an independent clause. A relative clause, also refered to as an ajective clause, is a dependent clause which modifies a noun. It is introduced by a relative pronoun: who which, that, etc. a relative clause can be defining or non-defining. A defining clause is one that is essential to the meaning of a sentence while a non-defining clause is not essential to the meaning of a sentence.
Phrasal verbs are multi-word verbs consisting of a verb plus one or two particles. They can be intransitive, transitive separable and transitive inseparable.
