In this unit I learned about teaching receptive skills. The receptive skills in language acquisition, reading and listening, have to do with more than just one’s eyes and ears. The context, meaning, and general motives for both reading and listening are all pertinent to overall comprehension. Of the motives for receptive skills, I learned about purpose versus entertainment motivations. The most useful part of this unit for me was the example with a newspaper heading ‘Bears destroyed by Cowboys’ in which the reader would need to understand the context of American football in addition to the meanings of the individual words.
