This unit provides examples of common problems that ESL teachers will face during their time in the classroom. There are problems that can come from monolingual and multilingual classes; in monolingual classrooms, the students may revert to using their native language if they are bored or having difficulty understanding the lesson. There are also challenges if students are reluctant to participate in classroom activities. Warmers, such as pictionary or hangman, are good activities to help develop confidence and enjoyment in the lesson plan. It will also be important for the teacher to use classroom time during the first lesson to establish rapport, to understand students' individual needs, and to identify students' goals.
