The most startling difference between the manner in which the Teacher approached his lessons in each video was his demeanor towards the students. In the second lesson, he was amiable and was willing to laugh and smile with his students. Not only did this establish rapport, but it also helped encourage his students to participate without intimidation. But beyond his personality change, I noticed in the second video that the Teacher demonstrates a SENSE OF URGENCY with his students timing the phases and making this known explicitly. He would say something like "take the next 7 minutes to..." this helps create a sense of urgency among the students to participate. It also helps maintain the pace of the lesson. When there is a sense of urgency among the students, they will be more likely to engage with the material in a more focused manner. Above all, the first lesson was a very good example of how NOT to interact with students. The Teacher demonstrated this by being condescending and intimidating (e.g. "Auxiliary verbs are very easy..."), by avoiding smiling or laughing, by repeating a misunderstood word/phrase without clarifying what it is, and by showing disinterest in the class (e.g. reading while the students are in a Study phase). The second lesson was a good example of how to positively interact with students and help them understand concepts effectively. The Teacher did this by smiling at his students, explicitly and effectively setting the pace of the lesson, by miming/acting out different words and phrases, by clarifying misunderstood concepts, by leading by example (e.g. drawing out his imaginary animal to show what the students were to do in this activity).
