This unit is all about teaching pronunciation and phonology. It gives a detailed explanation of phonology in areas of intonation, stress and the phonemic alphabet/symbols and provides techniques a teacher can use to help students improve on these areas. Intonation is all about the variation in volume and pitch in an entire sentence. It carries the message of the sentence; a rise/fall intonation indicates that the speaker has finished speaking; a fall/rise intonation indicates that the speaker expects a response from the person to whom he/she is speaking to or has not finished what he/she is saying; a level intonation indicates that the speaker does not have much to say or is not willing to communicate.
Stress emphasises on a word or a particular part of the sentence. Stressing on a particular word in a sentence interpretes what the speaker is trying to say. Meaning a sentence can have different meanings depending on the word that is stressed.
Phonemic alphabets helps the learner know how to pronounce new words, since the pronunciation of some words in English does not match their spelling. This unit provides phonemic symbols for voiced and unvoiced consonants, vowels and diphthongs. It further explains the articulation of consonants; how the position of the mouth differs in their pronunciation. Lastly, it provides activities the teacher can use to teach pronunciation to students.
As an English speaker, I hardly paid attention to intonation, stress and phonetic symbols. Through this unit I have seen how a particular intonation or stress gives meaning to or emphasises the meaning of a sentence and have learned the various phonetic alphabets.
